Vatnajökull National Park - the dynamic nature of fire and ice. With more than 1,400,000 ha, or almost 14% of Iceland, Vatnajökull National Park is an iconic volcanic region. It has more than ten central volcanoes, and eight of them are subglacial. The interaction between the volcanoes and the cracks that underlie the Vatnajökull ice cap takes different forms, the most spectacular of which is the jökulhlaup: a flash flood caused by the break in the margin of a glacier during an eruption. This recurring phenomenon has created unique sand plains, river systems and rapidly changing canyons.
